Superheroes insights on Disney. Part 2
For fanboys the insight behind the Marvel sellout is way bigger than for what Disney and Marvel are cheering up. While a bunch of people around the globe are ok with the deal, most die hard Marvel fanboys aren’t. So if Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger has agreed with Marvel’s CEO, Ike Perlmutter that they’ll let Marvel just be Marvel, then why the big worldwide fan turmoil?
As a creative director, when a brand like Disney has very deep roots amongst little kids and preteens, the mindset no matter what you do or say means: childish, infantile, girlish, you name it. For people perception is reality, no matter if you want to turn things around, mindsets are really tough barriers difficult to knock. With the Marvel acquisition, part of Disney’s strategy is to attract young boys and adult men back to them. But if Disney is such a hot shot, and wanted to attract young boys and adults, why didn’t they create years ago a super comic hero of their own? And this my friends is exactly the problem, you cannot think about Disney and not relate Mickey and all the daydreaming princesses to the “childish” brand. Yes, we’ll probably have bigger budgets to the movies, and probably better theme parks, but is this the Marvel essence?
Closing comments: Try to relate Marvel to Disney and I bet you picture Mickey Mouse in your mind. Only time will tell if this fuzz was overrated or if yes, Marvel is still Marvel and that gives us eternal peace of mind.
PS. Word of advise from worlwide superheroes to Mickey: Keep the Disney logo in really low, low visual profile away from the cool Marvel one. Better off, if you don’t show it at all. For fans sake!
